Bynum being healthy changes this team, more important than on offense Bynum gives them that defensive presence in the middle that was lacking at the end of last season. If he can block shots, rebound, and put in a few offensive boards that contribution alone should be enough. Kobe is going to continue to be the best player in the game and with a versatile big like Pau Gasol contributing for a full year this team is going to be tough to beat.
Coach Phil Jackson has experimented with bringing Lamar Odom off the bench, as the preseason has gone on, this looks more like a permanent move for Odom. This strengthens the bench and gives them another playmaker coming off the sideline. Backup point guard Jordan Farmar just continues to get better, as does swingman Trevor Ariza.
Ariza gives the Lakers another excellent perimeter defender who can take the pressure off Kobe on the defensive end at times. The Lakers depth gives them many options, they can go big and strong, or have a small and quick lineup out on the floor. Shooter like Sasha Vujacic and Vladimir Radmanovic will help spread the floor for the team.
Of course we can not forget about veteran point guard Derek Fisher. Having a backup like Farmar will give Fisher time to rest his legs throughout the season, but when it is crunch time you know Fisher’s calm and steady influence will be all over this team. His ability to knock down open shots comes second to the effect he has on his teammates. He has experience playing alongside Kobe, and teaches the young guys about life on and off the court.
This mixture of talent and the chemistry that was built last year should help lead the Lakers deep into the playoffs. They are looking for their first championship since the 2003 season, and health may be the only thing standing in the way.
