The 2009 MLB season has not yet started and the Atlanta Braves and their fans already have on their rally caps. The Braves are supposedly the 3rd best team in the NL East, trailing the NY Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies. What should anyone expect?

The Braves have not made the playoffs in what seems like forever. Their signature character trait of a solid pitching rotation has dwindled over the past few years. Their former stars are now on big money teams. John Smoltz has ventured to Boston. Andruw Jones is an unsure candidate to return to Atlanta. Everything seems implausible for the Braves to return to the top of their division. However, I still remember the impossible in 1991, the worst-to-first season. I still remember the 1995 victory over the Cleveland Indiands to win the World Series. I still see the fight of the Atlanta Braves; their philosophy is still to play hard and play till the end. It is the very reason why Atlanta should be sitting atop of NL East come September.

The first time I ever saw Michael Jordan was when I was searching through the channels one night. I was no more than eight years old. He was flying in the air with his tongue sticking out as he was preparing to dunk. I never saw anything like it. He was this mysterious figure that I would grow up to adore and admire. I wanted to be like Mike, except I was a girl. Truth be told, I wanted to better than Mike. In my entire life, I never thought we would have this discussion: Who is the next Michael Jordan? Everyone keeps saying Kobe Bryant or LeBron James is the next Michael Jordan. They will never touch his status.

Michael Jordan was the ultimate basketball player. He could shoot. He could dribble. He could drive to the basket. He could rebound. He could do anything and his career stats suggest this fact. Over his illustrious career, Jordan averaged over 30 points, more than 5 assists, garnered over 6 rebounds and over 2 steals per game. It’s not, simply, in the numbers’ game. It’s in the way he played the game. He wasn’t afraid of what he could do on the court every night. He attacked the rim. He utilized his teammates. He appreciated the coaches that he had. These are things that Bryant and James have failed to do so far in their careers. There will never be another Michael Jordan, well they will never be another individual Michael Jordan.

The story reads that on Christmas Day in 2008, two great teams, the Los Angeles Lakers (24-5) and the Boston Celtics (27-3), came together to play. One would imagine the goal was simply to win. However, the two teams seemed as if they were competing for something else besides a win. From the jump ball, the Lakers appeared to be on a mission to redeem themselves from last year’s NBA Finals. The Celtics played it as if it was just another game on the way to their ultimate goal of repeating as World Champions. The Lakers won the game with a score of 92-83, but the game can’t be told by the final score. It is told by what each team was playing for: another step in the right direction and redemption. The Celtics learned that they can be beaten. And, the Lakers got their redemption, for this was their Championship game.
