LeBron James makes his only trip to Madison Square Garden tonight.

In the NBA these days, it seems like there is a stat for everything. We’ve got PER, offensive efficiency ratings, defensive efficiency rating, and so on and so on.

It seems like every team in the league now employs their own stat guru. And while I’m not one to question the use of all these new statistics to evaluate NBA players (I actually kinda like them), I’m old school.

So I watched the first slate of games the NBA served up on opening week and they were not too shabby. For the Celtics-Cavs it was as expected and predicted, whoever had the most points between Pierce and James won the game. The Cleveland Plain-Dealer picture says it all. We don’t even have to talk about foul shooting or lack of.

Despite all the summer intrigue of Brooklyn’s Finest being shipped and showing off his new committed body in the zip codes of South Beach, it’s not going to happen! The Knicks can’t part with Stephon Marbury because they don’t have a better point guard to turn to.  Yeah it’s true they have wealth in point guards in Chris Duhon, Nate Robinson, Mardy Collins and the Summer League sensation Eric Roberson, and they all have qualities that are nice but “they ain’t Starbury” and in places where basketball is still played, that group is called a plethora of mediocrity, or fool’s gold.

After watching the Orlando Magic’s first two playoff games against the Toronto Raptors, one thing has become obvious:  Dwight Howard is playing like a man amongst boys.  In his first two post-season appearances, Howard has tallied near unprecedented numbers:  25 points, 22 boards and five highlight-reel blocks in Game One, followed up with an equally impressive 29 and 20 in Game Two.  For the series, he’s made 20 of his 30 shot attempts.  His consecutive 20/20 playoff performances equal those of recent, all-time greats:  Barkley, O’Neal, Duncan and Garnett.

What’s the deal with New York sports teams and curses? The most famous – The Curse of the Bambino helped the Yankees stay on top of their archrivals the Red Sox for too many decades. Currently, Knicks’ fans are suffering from a Sports gods’ curse and they probably don’t even know it or at least refuse to admit it. The fabled franchise’s woeful misfortunes can be traced back 8 years ago to around this time in the season – marquee player for 14 years Patrick Ewing broke his hand/wrist in a terrible fall against the Bucks. He sat out the rest of the season, and outrageously the Knicks – thru Jeff van Gundy’s exhaustive coaching – took the team to the Finals; they unfortunately lost to the rising Spurs (their first of many championships).
