They say defense wins championship, but is that always the case. I looked over a couple of different teams recently and I would have to say it's true. When the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their magical run to the Super Bowl the main reason they made it was on their defense. The offense really couldn't get out of their own way so without the number one defense at the time they wouldn't have made it.
Second comparison and it's more recent and that is the Indianapolis Colts. During their title run in the regular season they had one of the worst defenses around, but when the playoffs came around it was another story. They played well and continue that play into a Super Bowl win. Now I guess in reality defense does win championships in those two cases. Now does it always work out that way. Nope sometimes the best defensive team doesn't always get to the Super Bowl.
If you look at the stats the top five teams in total defense made the playoffs this year and every team that is in the playoffs are at least in the top 15 of defense. This just shows you that offense will carry you for so long, but once the playoffs start you have to count on your defense to keep you in the game. So in the end I guess the defense is a vital part to your teams success no matter how many points your offense scores.
